Santo Domingo.- The mayor of the National District, Carolina Mejía, led together with the President of the Republic Luis Abinader, the inauguration of the Malecón Deportivo with a speech focused on the recovery of historically ignored spaces of the capital’s coastline. During the event, she highlighted that the intervention of this section of the malecón marks a before and after in the way the city relates to its seafront.
In his speech, Mejía defined the new space as a point of convergence for citizens and national sport. “We are celebrating today the birth of a new boardwalk, which will become from this moment on the meeting point of Dominican sport”, he expressed, while highlighting its strategic importance in view of the Central American and Caribbean Games Santo Domingo 2026. Mejía also dedicated part of his speech to acknowledge the support of President Luis Abinader, to whom he attributed a key role in the materialization of the project. “I want to especially thank the one who saw the opportunity where others saw difficulty,” he pointed out, highlighting the president’s willingness to support the initiative from its earliest stages.“Never before had this area of the Malecón been taken into account to be intervened with a work of this magnitude,” Mejía affirmed, highlighting the character and impact of the project. The mayor insisted that the initiative not only represents a physical improvement, but also a transformation in the urban vision of Santo Domingo, oriented towards inclusion, sports and collective enjoyment.

Furthermore, he emphasized that the work is the result of a joint effort between different state institutions and sectors involved in the development of the capital city and the country. According to his explanation, the Malecón Deportivo seeks to establish itself as an accessible, modern, and safe space, capable of revitalizing urban life and strengthening the city’s identity. The inauguration of the Sports Malecón corresponds to the official opening of a complex that integrates sports, recreational, and leisure areas along several kilometers of the southern coastline. The project is conceived as a continuous corridor that includes courts, exercise areas, children’s spaces, and gastronomic areas, designed to promote physical activity, citizen coexistence, and the use of public space.
