President Abinader and Mayor Carolina Mejía inaugurate the Sports Boardwalk

Mayor Carolina Mejía assures that the Malecón Deportivo is a commitment to urban reactivation and quality of life, by reconnecting the city with the sea

Santo Domingo. – President Luis Abinader and the mayor of the National District, Carolina Mejía inaugurated this Thursday the Malecón Deportivo, an intervention of almost two kilometers of the southern coastline that marks a before and after in the capital by transforming a historically relegated area into an urban and sports reference of the Caribbean, with spaces for recreation, sports and coexistence in front of the sea, which will be the new meeting point for Dominican sports. During the event, President Abinader valued the qualities of the project and the impact it will have on sports practice and recreation for citizens as part of the Integrated Plan of Santo Domingo (PISD), a joint strategy based on the axes of urban development, sustainability and mobility, to transform the capital with coordinated management under a clear vision for the future. The project articulates a continuous system of sports, recreational, landscaping, and commercial areas, connected by a pedestrian promenade and an alternative mobility route that energizes the environment.

The Sports Malecón covers 90,000 square meters, was designed by architect Luis Alejandro Pérez and had an investment of RD$333 million pesos.

Sports Boardwalk: Axis of Integration and Urban Recovery of the Southern Coast

Carolina Mejía stated that the connection between the various areas of the Malecón Deportivo to complete a continuous route system constitutes one of the main urban contributions of the intervention, because it integrally activates this strip of the southern coast and returns to the city a space for coexistence and collective appropriation.

“This is much more than a plan, it is a commitment to the future, to the quality of life of our people and to the urban transformation that we deserve together,” Mejía pointed out about the PISD.

The municipal executive assured that more than a physical work, the Malecón Deportivo constitutes a commitment to urban reactivation, social inclusion, health, coexistence and the reconnection of the city with its seafront. “Its development not only provides new quality infrastructure for sports and recreation, but also generates urban animation, security, vitality and a new identity for a sector of the southern coast historically relegated,” said Mejía.

Highlights early delivery of works for the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games

From his side, the president of the Organizing Committee of the Central American and Caribbean Games, José P. Monegro, valued the joint effort of the Government headed by President Luis Abinader and the management of Mayor Carolina Mejía in the timely delivery of key infrastructures.

He highlighted that these works, completed well in advance, will be part of the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games, whose next edition marks the centenary of the event, strengthening the country’s preparation as a host and raising its organizational standards.

Transformation of the Malecón SD

The Sports Malecón is divided into four zones: skate park, a specialized track with international certification that will be the stage for the Central American and Caribbean Games in the Street modality; two beach volleyball courts, two 3×3 basketball courts (venue for that category in the Central American Games) and a 7-a-side soccer field, plus a gastronomic area, children’s games and parking for 130 vehicles. It also has an outdoor gym, a paved esplanade and street furniture; as well as two paddle tennis courts with their respective complementary support space and gastronomic service.
