Cell phone blocking could cost Guido his position, says Luisín

Blocking cell phones in Dominican Republic penitentiary centers could cost Guido Gómez Mazara his position, according to a warning from communicator Luisín Jiménez, who asserted that there are economic interests that could oppose the implementation of this measure.

During an intervention broadcast on the El Antinoti platform, Jiménez expressed his support for Gómez Mazara’s initiative, but maintained that preventing unauthorized telephone communications from prisons represents a challenge due to the alleged businesses that operate around these devices.

The communicator stated that activities related to the use of mobile phones within penitentiary facilities generate significant amounts of money, which is why, in his opinion, actions could arise to discredit the official.

Blocking cell phones could affect economic interests

Luisín Jiménez stated that he supports the actions promoted by Guido Gómez Mazara to restrict the use of cell phones in Dominican prisons.

However, he warned that the implementation of this initiative could face resistance from sectors that, according to his statements, obtain economic benefits from the presence of these devices in penitentiary centers.

“I want to express my support for Guido Gómez Mazara regarding what is being done to block cell phones in prisons,” he stated.

Jiménez asserted that the alleged business of telephones inside prisons moves millions of pesos, although during his intervention he did not present documentary evidence nor identify people linked to those activities.

Luisín warns about possible campaign against Guido Gómez Mazara

The communicator maintained that the economic interests that, according to him, exist around cell phones in prisons could finance a smear campaign against Gómez Mazara.

“That blockade is not that easy, that is not that simple and it could cost Guido Gómez Mazara his position,” he stated.

In explaining his warning, Jiménez pointed out that those who benefit from the alleged business would have sufficient resources to attempt to damage the official’s image.

According to his statements, an eventual campaign would seek to remove him from office as a consequence of his initiative to block unauthorized mobile communications in penitentiary facilities.

These statements constitute a warning from the communicator and not a substantiated complaint, in the shared intervention, with verifiable evidence of an ongoing campaign.

Pilot program to begin in five prisons

During his statements, Luisín Jiménez stated that the Dominican Republic has 51 penitentiary facilities and that the cell phone blocking plan would begin with a pilot test in five establishments.

The communicator explained that the initiative would be implemented initially in a small number of prisons before being extended to other centers.

However, the shared intervention does not specify which five venues would be selected nor the dates scheduled for the project’s execution.

Jiménez insisted that the process could prove complex due to the interests that, as he maintained, are related to the use of telephones within prisons.

Debate on the use of phones in prisons

Luisín Jiménez’s warning brings into discussion the obstacles that an initiative aimed at restricting unauthorized mobile communications in the prison system could face.

The communicator believes that institutional support will be important for Gómez Mazara to be able to move forward with the project without being affected by possible pressures.

Although Jiménez asserted that there are economic interests capable of promoting actions against the official, he did not provide details during his intervention that would allow those accusations to be confirmed.

At the moment, his statements reflect a position of support for the measure and a warning about the difficulties that, in his view, could arise during its implementation.
