Defense Minister meets with UN special envoy in Haiti

Santo Domingo.- The Minister of Defense, Lieutenant General Carlos Antonio Fernández Onofre, received a visit from Carlos Ruiz Massieu, Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations for Haiti and head of the United Nations Integrated Office in that country (BINUH). Ruiz Massieu attended accompanied by the head of Cabinet, William P. Gardner, and the political officer of the UN headquarters, Caroline McQueen, in a context where the situation in Haiti represents a direct challenge to regional security and the stability of the island, the Ministry reported in a note.

During the meeting, which was also attended by Gilberto Núñez, head of the United Nations Department in the Directorate of International Organizations, strategic issues related to international cooperation, border security, and the coordination of multilateral efforts in the face of the complex challenges posed by the Haitian crisis were addressed. Fernández Onofre highlighted the significance of the dialogue held, underlining that the Ministry of Defense maintains a firm position of vigilance and preparation, while valuing the cooperation of international organizations such as the UN in the search for joint and sustainable solutions.
