DN Mayor's Office deploys more than 1,200 brigade members for preventive and mitigation work during the hurricane season

Santo Domingo, DN – The National District City Hall has more than 1,200 brigade members for preventive and mitigation work, regarding the start of the hurricane season which will extend until November 30.

During an activation meeting of the National District’s Committee for Disaster Prevention, Mitigation, and Response to outline guidelines for the start of the 2026 hurricane season, the number of firefighters, including both permanent and volunteer staff, was estimated at over 880, in addition to the city council’s brigade members.

While heading the meeting held at the Central Station of the National District Fire Department, the ADN secretary general, Elizabeth Mateo, reviewed the plans of the various institutions and directorates of the city council. Likewise, actions that would be taken to provide security to citizens in the midst of possible meteorological phenomena were reviewed.

In that sense, Mateo announced that under the leadership of Carolina Mejía, guidelines were issued for the creation of an inter-institutional prevention brigade for the hurricane season to carry out focused work in the 30 most critical points of the city, moving not only the city council’s brigades, but also integrating representatives from other institutions to carry out these tasks aimed at avoiding uncomfortable situations and saving lives.

Furthermore, the secretary general highlighted that a vitally important element in this plan is the integration of neighborhood association presidents, with a view to incorporating community members in the identification of needs.

“We are going to work there on the talks with the Civil Defense, preventive pruning, we are going to verify the signage, cleaning of storm drains and filters, and sanitation issues. In other words, we are all going to go together to each community, in about 30 critical points during these months, where we will be working during the hurricane season,” he maintained.

Mateo listened to the presentations on the communication plan, the construction of filters and storm drains, preventive pruning, among other actions related to the hurricane season. “Every year we have much more experience, every year we even see different phenomena that we have had to respond to. The idea is for that response to be increasingly immediate, effective, and coordinated,” he added.

The season that began this Monday, June 1st, and will extend until November 30th, will have 13 formations, including six that could become hurricanes, according to the forecast explained by Indomet forecaster, Cristopher Florián.

The director of the Civil Defense of the National District, Alexander García, detailed the assessments that this relief institution has carried out, based on risk levels and structural factors in the main critical points, with the aim of preserving lives in those sectors.

The meeting was attended by representatives from the Ministry of Public Health, the National District Fire Department, Civil Defense, the 9-1-1 System, the Superintendency of Electricity, Digesett, Intrant, the Dominican Red Cross, and the Municipal Police. Likewise, the directors and coordinators of the various operational departments of the city council were in attendance.
