The UNODC is considered the main global institution in the field of drug control and crime. The request to present a candidate arose during La Semanal last September 15, when Rebecca Márquez, director of the Office of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs of the U.S. Department of State, proposed that the Dominican Republic nominate a representative to lead the UNODC. According to Abinader, this recognition is in response to the country’s outstanding track record in drug control policies and the fight against organized crime, evidenced by the implementation of good practices in the application of measures against these crimes. The current executive director of UNODC, Ghada Waly, will leave her position in November 2025, which opens the opportunity for the Dominican Republic to participate in the selection of the organization’s new leadership.Government evaluates candidates to lead UN Office on Drugs and Crime
Santo Domingo. – President Luis Abinader informed that the Dominican government is still evaluating profiles to subsequently submit a candidate to head the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). The president emphasized that the intention is to propose an expert with the necessary experience to strengthen the fight against drug trafficking, crime and other offenses.
“We are consulting both the United States and other allied countries because of the importance of this position in the fight against drug trafficking, crime and delinquency,” declared Abinader, highlighting that the United States will support the candidate presented by the Dominican Republic.
