Man sentenced to 30 years in prison for homicide in Hato Mayor

SANTO DOMINGO.– The Collegiate Court of Hato Mayor sentenced a man to 30 years in prison for the murder of another, which occurred on December 30, 2022. The Public Ministry, represented by prosecutor Luz Almonte, demonstrated the guilt of Miguel Ángel Sosa (El Grande) in the death of José Luis Mota Rosa (Papolo). The accusation was supported by material, testimonial, and audiovisual evidence, which confirmed the violation of articles 295 and 304 of the Dominican Penal Code.

The incident originated after a fight between the victim and a relative of Sosa, who tried to attack him with a machete. Mota Rosa defended himself, injuring him with a bottle. Minutes later, the victim moved to Altagracia street, corner of Antonio Guzmán, where he tried to take refuge in the entrance of a business. There he was located by Sosa, who chased him armed with a knife to the patio of a nearby house and gave him four stab wounds, causing his death. During the investigation, the Public Prosecutor’s Office obtained images from security cameras showing the defendant chasing the victim and subsequently walking with the weapon in his hand immediately after the event. The judges Francisco Arias Sánchez, Haissel Uribe Reyes and María del Carmen García ordered that the convicted person serve the sentence in the El Seibo public prison.
