Santo Domingo. – Dozens of leaders of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) highlighted the legacy left by the late leader Dr. José Francisco Peña Gómez on the 27th anniversary of his passing today.
Within the framework of the commemorative activities held this Saturday to remember the death of the jurist, the members of the PRM, placed several floral arrangements, to exalt and give continuity to his legacy.
Twenty-seven years ago, the country lost Peña Gómez, who died at the age of 61 on May 10, 1998.
The former president Hipólito Mejía, one of the best friends of the late leader of the Socialist International, affirmed that Peña Gómez kept alive the flame of the struggle for democracy and against the repression unleashed in the country after the April 1965 uprising.
He pondered that the greatest leader of the masses fought against all adversities since his childhood and managed to become a great national and international politician.
Mejía urged not to forget Peña Gómez, neither his memory nor the commitment he had with the Dominican Republic.

In the same terms, Isidro Torres, president of the Modern Revolutionary Party in the municipality of Santo Domingo Norte, expressed himself, who highlighted that, Peña Gómez practiced politics with a high sense of civic and patriotic responsibility and for this reason he did not spare any effort to promote reforms aimed at improving the democratic system and the quality of life of the Dominican population.
Torres stated that Villa Mella (now Santo Domingo Norte) was christened by the deceased leader as the imperial guard, which he awaited at his massive rallies at the head of the Francisco del Rosario Sánchez Bridge (the 17th), to formally begin them.

“That is why I urge Dominican youth to emulate and reap the rewards of his greatness, because despite coming from the underground in the most adverse situations that can surround a human being, he transformed himself into a leader, who when he had to make big decisions, he did so, in contrast to when he had to take actions to pacify the country, as he did when they took power from him through fraud in the 1994 elections, which could have developed a movement of greater significance as in 1965, he preferred to call us all to go to the churches and for that reason today with great determination and faith we profess the ideological sentiment of Peña Gómez,” he said.
He maintained that the deceased leader always placed the interests of the nation above personal desires. Likewise, Torres asserted that the government headed by President Luis Abinader has been characterized by being a government management that is applying in social terms the philosophy of “First the People” that had been interposed by the deceased leader as his management proposal.
The statements were offered at the Cristo Redentor Cemetery, where the remains of the deceased political leader rest.
In addition, Representative Patricia Núñez was present at the activity, as well as the leaders Darío de Jesús, Carlos Ortiz, Juan Herrera, Ace Charles, Caonabo Muñoz, among others.
