The INTRANT initiative that seeks to reduce accidents; says deaths exceed three thousand each year
Santo Domingo.- The National Institute of Transit and Land Transportation (INTRANT) announced the launch of the “Traffic Guardians” initiative, a volunteer program aimed at students that seeks to strengthen road safety and foster a culture of respect on public roads.
The institution explained that the initiative allows students to fulfill their 30 hours of social service through awareness and road safety guidance actions, “while turning them into multiplying agents of good practices within their communities.”
The program is developed following an agreement signed between the Ministry of Education (MINERD) and INTRANT, which seeks to establish a road safety subject in schools, in addition to implementing educational workshops and orientation activities for drivers, pedestrians, and motorcyclists regarding responsible behavior on the road.
A statement specifies that its educational approach responds to the need to generate sustainable changes in citizen behavior. “Road safety education is the most powerful tool to save lives, by directly influencing the prevention of accidents and the construction of safer coexistence in public spaces,” explained Milton Morrison, Director General of INTRANT.
Three thousand deaths
As reported, the initiative seeks to be a concrete response to road accidents, which represent one of the main causes of mortality in the country, with more than 3,000 deaths annually and a rate that exceeds 60 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants. “This scenario highlights the urgency of strengthening educational initiatives that contribute to the prevention and reduction of risks on the roads,” it states.

Add that the program is supported by the current legal framework regarding mobility and road safety education. “Law No. 63-17 on Mobility, Land Transportation, Transit, and Road Safety establishes road safety education as a mandatory component within the educational system, aimed at forming responsible citizens who respect traffic regulations,” it highlights.
Likewise, it points out that Law No. 67-13, which creates the governing entity for transit and land transport, confers upon INTRANT the responsibility of designing and implementing public policies regarding regulation, education, and road safety.
