Santo Domingo.- With more than 2,900 people killed in road accidents during 2025, road safety in the Dominican Republic continues to be one of the main public health and mobility challenges in the country. In the framework of World Road Safety Day, Diageo reiterated the importance of promoting responsible decisions before driving, especially in relation to alcohol consumption.
The company highlighted that prevention begins even before starting a vehicle, debunking myths that still persist about the ability to recover quickly after consuming alcoholic beverages. As explained, practices such as drinking coffee, taking a cold shower, or exposing oneself to fresh air do not accelerate the elimination of alcohol from the body, so the only safe way to avoid risks is to plan ahead and opt for alternative transportation or designate a responsible driver.

As part of its education efforts, Diageo promotes the global platform DRINKiQ, an initiative aimed at offering information based on scientific evidence about the effects of alcohol on the body and on decision-making.
The company also highlighted its participation in the National Pact for Road Safety, an initiative developed together with the Presidency of the Republic and the National Institute of Transit and Land Transportation (INTRANT), through which it promotes actions focused on the reduction of traffic accidents.
Among the contributions made are the donation of breathalyzers and the technical training of personnel in charge of road enforcement, with the purpose of strengthening preventive efforts and improving the response capacity of the authorities.
During the Ibero-American Road Safety Meeting, Hortensia Pérez, Public Affairs Manager for Diageo in Central America, the Caribbean, and Venezuela, emphasized that promoting responsible consumption involves encouraging conscious decisions before driving.
“Promoting responsible consumption is also about promoting conscious decisions before getting behind the wheel. That is why we promote evidence-based information and tools that contribute to prevention and greater awareness of the risks of combining alcohol and driving,” he/she expressed.
Likewise, the company highlighted the results of “En Contravía” (Against Traffic), an immersive and interactive experience designed to raise awareness among the population about the consequences of driving under the influence of alcohol. The program has impacted more than 8,000 people in the Dominican Republic and, due to its reach, it was officially adopted by INTRANT to integrate it into its road safety education campaigns and processes.
The initiative also includes the renovation and modernization of the National School of Road Education (ENEVIAL) Hall, with the goal of strengthening the training of future drivers and fostering a culture of prevention from the license acquisition process.
María Gabriela Mabo, Director of Corporate Relations for Diageo in Central America, the Caribbean, and Venezuela, stated that building safer mobility requires the participation of all sectors of society.
“Building a culture of safe mobility requires empathy, self-care, and the joint commitment of companies, authorities, and citizens. Every responsible decision, even before getting into a vehicle, can save lives,” he/she pointed out.
According to statistics from the Permanent Observatory of Road Safety (OPSEVI), road accidents continue to represent one of the leading causes of mortality in the country, which has prompted new initiatives aimed at strengthening education, enforcement, and prevention to reduce casualties on Dominican roads.
