Santiago Matías’ comment, published through his social media, came after the Dominican national team’s 4-1 defeat against the Haitian team in the Concacaf Nations League. The match, played at the Félix Sánchez Olympic Stadium in the National District, had a massive presence of Haitian fans who packed the stands to support their national team.

“We must invade Haiti and control the entire island before they take control first,” Matías wrote through his X account, accompanying the post with a Dominican Republic flag.

The topic has generated diverse reactions on social media from those who claim the match did not have a significant representation of Dominicans in the stadium; however, the vast majority of attendees were Haitian.

One of the stadium gates was knocked down during the match, amidst a brawl that took place inside the sports venue.

Matías’ approach to the situation found support among numerous users on social media, many of whom demanded greater security in the vicinity of the stadium and a greater presence of agents from the General Directorate of Migration (DGM) to ensure compliance with immigration laws.

The Haitian migration situation continues to be one of the main topics on the national agenda, amidst the strengthening of controls and operations against irregular migration. The prolonged security, political, and humanitarian crisis that Haiti is going through continues to exert pressure on migratory flows toward the Dominican Republic, a country with which it shares a land border of nearly 400 kilometers. The expansion of armed gangs, the internal displacement of thousands of people, and the difficulties in accessing basic services have worsened living conditions in Haitian territory.
