Santo Domingo.- A power outage during an event taking place at a hotel in Santo Domingo briefly interrupted the explanation by the Vice President of the Republic, Raquel Peña, regarding the recent increases in electricity bills and the public’s complaints.
“Oh, the power went out,” stated the vice president as the lights went out while she was explaining that the recent increases in electricity bills are associated with higher consumption in homes and businesses due to the high temperatures currently being recorded.
Peña understands that consumers, as well as regulatory and energy distribution authorities, must analyze consumption.
He also called on the citizenry to practice rational energy consumption while they are in their homes.
The Electricity Distribution Companies (Edeeste, Edenorte, and Edesur) recently explained that the amount reflected in recent bills is due to higher energy consumption associated with the high temperatures recorded during the summer and not to an increase in the electricity rate.

According to what was stated, this increase in consumption may also cause some users to move to a higher tariff block, depending on the amount of energy consumed during the billing period, which can affect the final amount of the bill.
As of July 30, 2026, peak electricity demand reached 4,330.80 megawatts (MW), exceeding by 407.8 MW the record of 3,923 MW registered on August 14, 2025. This represents an approximate growth of 10.4%, recorded during the same period last year, mainly due to the more frequent use of air conditioning and refrigeration equipment.
