Beachgoers find more than $800,000 floating off Italian coast

Beachgoers in Sicily, Italy, discovered more than $800,000 in cash floating near the shoreline after several sealed packages were thrown into the sea from a stranded boat, according to local media.

Authorities said the vessel, reportedly arriving from Malta, ran out of fuel before reaching the coast. As a Coast Guard patrol approached, one person who remained aboard allegedly threw several packages containing cash into the water.

People on the beach recovered coolers and plastic-wrapped bundles filled with banknotes before handing them over to the Coast Guard. Italy’s Guardia di Finanza, police and Carabinieri later seized the money.

Prosecutors in Ragusa have opened an investigation to determine the origin of the cash and the circumstances surrounding the incident.
