Havana.- The Government of Cuba expressed its condolences this Monday to Indonesia for the damage caused by the powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck the eastern part of the Asian country.
“Heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Indonesia for the victims, the injured, and the material damage caused by a powerful earthquake. We extend them to the relatives and loved ones of the deceased,” stated Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez on his X account.

The earthquake took place around 6:00 a.m. local time on Saturday (22:00 GMT on Friday) with the epicenter about 62 kilometers northwest of Ende, the most populous city on Flores, with nearly 90,000 inhabitants, and at a depth of 10 kilometers, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
The Local Disaster Management Agency (BPBD, for its acronym in Indonesian) reported in its latest balance a total of 68 deaths, 213 injured people, and about 10,000 displaced, but did not report any missing persons among the rubble.

On Saturday, a strong 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Flores with its epicenter 62 kilometers from Ende, the island’s most populous city, which was followed by nearly a thousand aftershocks, many of which were felt by the population.
Indonesia sits on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, a zone of intense seismic and volcanic activity due to the convergence of several tectonic plates, where about 7,000 earthquakes are recorded each year, most of them moderate.
