Caracas.- The acting president of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez, assured this Tuesday that the country is in “calm” after a month of the attack by the United States in Caracas and neighboring states, an operation that ended with the capture of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.
“The country is calm. The country is peaceful, but it has a national outcry: to demand the freedom of President Maduro and the first combatant, congresswoman Cilia Flores“, stated Delcy Rodríguez, accompanied by her brother and president of the Parliament, Jorge Rodríguez, and the Minister of Interior, Diosdado Cabello.

In a broadcast on the state channel VTV, the acting president indicated that in “these days”, without specifying details, she spoke by phone with the President of the United States, Donald Trump, and with his Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, and advocated that the “path” be respect. “If there’s one thing that has united Venezuelans, it’s the rejection of this type of aggression (…), it’s that the differences, the controversies, the divergences with the Government of the United States must be done diplomatically, through political dialogue,” Delcy Rodríguez underlined. He also stated that Venezuela “has transmuted and matured” after a month of the United States’ attack – which left a balance of more than a hundred dead, including civilians and military personnel – and bet on “working hard” to “overcome” the “differences”. Maduro remains in a United States jail and is accused of four federal charges, including narcoterrorism conspiracy, conspiracy to import cocaine, and collaborating with criminal organizations classified as terrorists by Washington. On January 5th, two days after Maduro’s capture, Delcy Rodríguez assumed the role of acting president of the country and has implemented a series of measures that, she assures, were the president’s decision. Rodríguez initiated an “exploratory” process to resume diplomatic relations with the U.S., the sale of oil to that country was agreed upon, and, in addition, he promoted a reform of the organic hydrocarbon law to attract private and foreign investments to this sector.
