In the midst of the negotiation with Iran, Trump spoke with Netanyahu

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and U.S. President Donald Trump agreed to a meeting on U.S. soil “in the near future,” according to a statement issued this Friday by the Israeli Prime Minister’s office following a telephone conversation between the two leaders.

The announcement comes on the eve of the 250th anniversary of the United States Declaration of Independence, which is commemorated on July 4th, and amidst a period of tension between the two allies.

During the call, Netanyahu stressed that the United States is “the guarantor of freedom in the world” and that Israel “enormously” values the close bond between both nations, according to the same statement. No date or venue for the meeting was specified.

Aside from the conversation between the two heads of government, Israeli President Isaac Herzog visited the United States Embassy in Jerusalem this Friday to deliver a letter addressed to Trump to Ambassador Mike Huckabee. In the letter, dated July 1, Herzog conveyed his “warmest congratulations” on behalf of “the people and the State of Israel” and described the anniversary as “a moment to honor the incredible triumph of the American spirit.”

In the letter, Herzog highlighted the “unique and unbreakable alliance” between both countries, which he stated is nourished “from the same springs of the Bible” and from “the same fundamental values of freedom, democracy, and human dignity.”

The meeting agreement comes against a backdrop of friction between the two capitals. In recent weeks, Donald Trump launched several public criticisms against the Israeli prime minister following Israel’s offensive against Hezbollah in Lebanon, which put peace negotiations with Iran and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz at risk.

The tension reached its roughest point in early June, when Trump rebuked Netanyahu in a phone call. “You’re fucking crazy. You’d be in jail if it weren’t for me. I’m saving your skin. Now everyone hates you. Everyone hates Israel for this,” the American president stated, according to one of the cables. Both leaders publicly downplayed that exchange.

The conflict in the Middle East was triggered at the end of February by a joint offensive by the United States and Israel against Iran, according to the information available in the statements.
