Maduro’s wife reportedly suffered a heart attack and seeks house arrest

Cilia Flores, wife of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, may have suffered a mild heart attack while in federal detention in Brooklyn, according to claims from her lawyers. The 69-year-old has reportedly lost about 25 pounds, or 11 kilograms, during her confinement and has experienced persistent dizziness, lightheadedness and difficulty breathing. Her attorneys say she may require heart surgery.

Flores’ legal team is asking a U.S. judge to release her from jail and place her under house arrest at a New York residence with 24-hour security, arguing that her medical problems cannot be adequately treated in detention. Her lawyers have also said she has permanent scars from injuries allegedly suffered during her capture.

Flores and Maduro have pleaded not guilty to the charges against them, while their defense teams are also seeking to have the case dismissed on immunity grounds.
