Marco Rubio will visit Colombia, Ecuador and Peru between September 8 and 10

Washington.– U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will visit Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru between September 8 and 10 as part of a tour focused on strengthening Washington’s cooperation with these countries regarding security, trade, and the fight against drug trafficking.

The State Department reported that during his tour, the head of U.S. diplomacy will hold meetings with representatives of the governments of Colombia and Peru, in addition to meeting with the president of Ecuador, Daniel Noboa.

The agenda also includes addressing United States support for Colombia during its recovery process following the earthquake that affected the country on August 10th.

Among the main issues to be addressed during the tour are regional cooperation against drug trafficking and organized crime, as well as the possibilities of expanding trade relations between the United States and the three South American nations.

Although Washington has not revealed all the details of the agenda, Colombian media indicate that Rubio could meet with the president of Colombia, Abelardo de la Espriella, in Barranquilla.

The visit to Peru, for its part, will be Rubio’s first since Keiko Fujimori’s arrival to the Presidency at the end of July.

Regional security will set Marco Rubio’s agenda

The tour comes at a time when the United States is seeking to expand cooperation with several Latin American governments, especially in areas related to security and combating organized crime.

Colombia has announced its accession to the Americas Anti-Cartel Coalition (A3C), an initiative promoted by the U.S. government to strengthen regional actions against drug trafficking and other criminal organizations.

Security would also be among the issues that Rubio will address with Daniel Noboa during his visit to Ecuador.

Washington and Quito have strengthened their cooperation against drug trafficking over the last year, including the execution of joint operations in Ecuadorian territory.

With this new tour, the United States seeks to strengthen its political, commercial, and security ties with governments in the region, amidst greater coordination against drug trafficking and organized crime.
