New York City Subway modifies J and M line routes until November

New York City Subway riders traveling between Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan will face service changes over five weekends due to maintenance work being performed by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) on the tracks used by the J and M lines.

The modifications began on Saturday, October 17, and will continue until November 23. During this period, some trains will stop running on their usual routes, so passengers will need to use connecting buses or make transfers to reach their destinations.

Work on the New York City Subway includes the replacement of rail mechanisms located near the Marcy Avenue station in Brooklyn, which allow trains to switch between local and express tracks. This equipment was last replaced in 1997 and, according to the MTA, needs to be renewed to ensure the system’s operability.

New York City Subway: dates

The interruptions are scheduled for five periods: October 17 and 18, October 24 and 25, November 7 to 9, November 13 to 16, and November 20 to 23.

During the work, J line trains will operate only between Jamaica Center-Parsons/Archer, in Queens, and Myrtle Avenue-Broadway, in Brooklyn, without continuing their usual route to Manhattan.

To cover part of the suspended route, the MTA will provide free shuttle buses between Myrtle Avenue-Broadway and Delancey Street-Essex Street, allowing passengers to connect with other public transportation services.

Changes in the lines

M line trains will also have modifications and will run in two separate sections: one between Middle Village-Metropolitan Avenue and Myrtle-Wyckoff Avenues, and another from the latter station to Myrtle Avenue-Broadway.

On both routes, the expected frequency will be approximately 20 minutes, so some passengers will need to make additional connections.

New York City Subway: alternatives

Recommended options include the L line, available from Myrtle-Wyckoff Avenues, as well as the A and C lines, which offer other connection possibilities to Manhattan from Broadway Junction.

Passengers coming from Jamaica, in Queens, may also consider the E line to travel to Manhattan, depending on their destination.

In addition to weekend disruptions, the J line will have temporary modifications during certain weekdays, with local service between Marcy Avenue and Myrtle Avenue-Broadway.

Given these changes in the New York City Subway, authorities recommend checking service advisories before traveling and allowing extra time for commutes, especially when it is necessary to transfer between trains and buses.
