One of the eight students stabbed by another girl at a school in Istanbul dies

This is the sixth incident involving deceased or injured students in Turkish schools in the last six months.

Ankara.- One of the 8 students who were stabbed at a religious high school in Istanbul has died, as confirmed by the Turkish Government, in the sixth incident involving deaths or injuries in Turkish schools in the last six months.

The death of one of the victims was announced by Minister of Education, Yusuf Tekin, who stated that classes at this school have been suspended for today and tomorrow.

Previously, the governor of Istanbul, Davut Gül, had indicated that the attacker is a student who lives near the school where the attack took place but attends a different educational institution.

“She entered the school dressed in a school uniform and began stabbing the girls indiscriminately,” recounted Gül.

The authorities have reported that an assailant has been arrested.

Mustafa Gencay, the father of one of the injured, said that his daughter is in the seventh grade (12 to 13 years old) and that she recounted that two girls around 17 years old entered the school and began attacking the students.

Gencay has stated to the newspaper Cumhurriyet that the two attackers were dressed in street clothes and did not exchange words with their victims before they began stabbing them.

The authorities have imposed a media blackout on this incident, and the authorities have only indicated that both the aggressor and the victims are students of an Imam Hatip, a type of theology school that was equated to high school after a legal reform by the Islamist government.

Previously, the authorities had reported that the attack took place at a religious institute in the Basaksehir district of the Turkish metropolis and that the attacker had been arrested, while all the victims, aged between ten and thirteen, had been hospitalized, three of them in serious condition.

Gül had reported that one of the serious victims was undergoing surgery, and that the other two were out of danger.

Since last April, ten students and three teachers have died, and 42 people have been injured in shootings at Turkish schools.

On April 14, in Sanliurfa, a student armed with a shotgun wounded 16 people before taking his own life.

The deadliest incident took place in Kahramanmaraş on April 15, when a student used his father’s weapon, which he had brought to school, to kill ten people, including a teacher, and injure thirteen others.

On September 22, a similar attack at a school in Manisa left eleven students injured. More recently, on September 28, a teacher died in a shooting in the courtyard of a high school in Osmaniye.
