The Vatican confirmed it tried a deal with Maduro for his exile from Venezuela

Vatican City.- The Secretary of State, Pietro Parolin, confirmed that the Vatican worked to achieve a solution “that would avoid any bloodshed, also an agreement with Nicolás Maduro and other representatives of the regime, but this was not possible.”

«We had tried what also appeared in some newspapers», said Parolin on Saturday afternoon on the sidelines of an event in indirect reference to what the Washington Post wrote about his intervention to obtain a safe-conduct for Nicolás Maduro, before he was arrested by the United States. And he added: “We always support a peaceful solution, but we have also found ourselves faced with a fait accompli, with a situation of fact.”

Situation of “great uncertainty”

He explained that the situation in the country is now “of great uncertainty” and wished that it “evolve towards stability, towards an economic recovery because the situation is very precarious, people are suffering”.

The Vatican’s ‘number two’ also stated that a democratization of the country is now ‘necessary’.

Although Parolin did not give details, the newspaper The Washington Post published on January 9th that the pontifical State would have tried to negotiate an asylum offer in Russia for the Venezuelan president.

Pope Leo XIV has alluded on several occasions to the crisis in Venezuela, the last one this Friday during his long speech before the diplomatic corps accredited to the Holy See, when he asked that the will of the Venezuelan people be respected and peaceful solutions be sought away from “partisan interests”.
