Trump says “France is burning” as protests over cost of living turn violent

U.S. President Donald Trump blamed France’s unrest on immigration policies and the arrival of migrants from different cultural backgrounds, declaring Sunday, October 18, that “France is burning.” In a post on Truth Social, Trump claimed immigration had damaged the country and urged the French government to close its borders and regain control before it was too late.
France has been experiencing widespread demonstrations over rising living costs, alongside student protests over deteriorating school conditions. Saturday’s mobilizations followed calls to revive the Yellow Vests movement, which emerged in 2018 in response to social inequality. The demonstrations escalated into clashes, vandalism and extensive property damage in several cities.
