A cruise ship carrying more than 3,300 passengers and crew collided with a container vessel at the German port of Bremerhaven on Sunday as strong winds battered the area.

The TUI-operated Mein Schiff 3, which was departing for a 20-day cruise to the Canary Islands, struck the cargo vessel about 10 minutes after leaving the quay. Passenger-recorded footage showed tugboats attempting to steer the cruise liner away as it scraped along the side of the container ship.

The collision reportedly damaged several lifeboats on the cruise liner and caused a tear approximately 10 meters long in the hull of the container vessel.

The ship subsequently returned to the Columbuskaje quay, where specialists began assessing the damage and determining whether it was safe to continue the voyage.

A total of 2,428 passengers and 922 crew members were aboard at the time of the incident. No injuries had been reported in the initial accounts, and passengers were initially permitted to remain on board while the damage was assessed.
