Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) in San Juan arrested Dominican national Modestina Villanueva Javier and U.S. citizen Erick Martinez Aulet last week. Both were indicted on charges of marriage fraud and conspiracy, according to HSI.

Authorities say marriage fraud involves entering into a marriage for the purpose of evading immigration laws. The agency emphasized that marriage is a legal and personal commitment, and that falsely presenting a relationship to obtain an immigration benefit can constitute a federal offense.

HSI said it remains committed to protecting the integrity of the immigration system and ensuring that individuals who manipulate the process face legal consequences. The announcement did not provide further details about the allegations against the two defendants.
