PHILADELPHIA. Dominican Cristopher Sánchez will be the starting pitcher for the National League in the Major League Baseball All-Star Game, scheduled for this Tuesday at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, in a highly anticipated duel against right-hander Dylan Cease of the Toronto Blue Jays.

The announcement was made by National League manager Dave Roberts, along with the Philadelphia Phillies, making Sánchez the first pitcher from the franchise to start a Midsummer Classic since Roy Halladay in 2011 and only the seventh pitcher in club history to receive that honor.
Just a week ago, Sánchez had expressed his excitement after being selected for the second time to the All-Star Game, although he preferred not to think about the possibility of starting the game while he still had pending starts with the Phillies. Now, the Dominican left-hander will lead the National League pitching staff in the most important mid-season event.
“I think he deserves it. He is one of the locals and the city of Philadelphia will enjoy seeing him and supporting him,” Roberts stated when explaining the decision to give the ball to the Dominican player.
Sánchez will share the spotlight with his teammates Brandon Marsh and Kyle Schwarber, who will also be in the National League’s starting lineup. Schwarber will take the designated hitter spot, replacing the injured Shohei Ohtani.
The Dominican arrives at the All-Star Game backed by an extraordinary campaign. He holds an 11-4 record, a 2.62 ERA, and leads all of Major League Baseball with 5.4 bWAR, in addition to ranking second in fWAR (4.0). He also starred in a streak of 50.2 consecutive scoreless innings between late April and early June, one of the longest recorded in a single season since 1893.
For its part, the American League will have Dylan Cease as the starter, who is experiencing a brilliant first season with Toronto. Since his return from the injured list, he has accumulated a 1.73 ERA and 56 strikeouts in six starts, establishing himself as one of the top candidates for the Cy Young Award.
