BOSTON. The Arizona Diamondbacks placed Dominican second baseman Ketel Marte on the restricted list this Monday, shortly before the start of the first game of the series against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park.

Marte did not show up at the stadium, according to a team representative, so Arizona waited until a few minutes before the game to confirm his status.

The team did not offer additional details regarding the absence of the star Dominican player.

Following Marte’s absence, Venezuelan José Fernández was called up from Triple-A Reno and placed in the lineup as the third baseman, batting seventh in the offensive order.

Marte was scheduled to act as the designated hitter, while fellow Venezuelan Ildemaro Vargas would occupy second base. Ultimately, Lars Nootbaar took over the designated hitter spot.

Marte’s situation represents an unexpected absence for the D-backs, who did not provide information for the moment on how long the Dominican player will remain on the restricted list.
