Mets beat Dodgers in extra innings with outstanding performances by Lindor and Alvarez

Los Angeles – In an emotion-filled night at Dodger Stadium, the New York Mets withstood a fierce comeback led by Shohei Ohtani and edged out the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-3 in extra innings, starting the National League Championship Series rematch on a good note.

Venezuelan catcher Francisco Álvarez drove in the tiebreaking run with a double in the top of the tenth inning, his first RBI in four weeks, while Puerto Rican Francisco Lindor hit a home run to lead off the game and added a run-scoring single in the tenth inning.

Despite Shohei Ohtani’s imposing 23rd home run of the season – who also tied the game in the ninth with a sacrifice fly – the Mets kept their composure. Closer Edwin Díaz, pitching for the third time in four days, allowed the tie but took the win (3-0). Right-hander José Buttó earned the first save of his career by authoritatively retiring the Dodgers’ last batters.

The game also marked the return to the Major Leagues of right-hander Paul Blackburn, who pitched five scoreless innings, striking out Ohtani twice. For his part, Dustin May worked six solid innings for the Dodgers.
