Mets stand by Carlos Mendoza despite poor start to the season

The president of baseball operations, David Stearns, assured that the organization is not considering making a change in the technical command, even though the club has a 10-21 record, one of the worst starts in the franchise’s history after 31 games. “We know we’re not where we want to be, but we don’t see this as a problem with the leader,” Stearns affirmed, making it clear that confidence in Mendoza remains intact. Management, also headed by owner Steve Cohen, has not held formal conversations about a possible dismissal, even in a context where other renowned managers have been recently fired in the Major Leagues. From the team’s perspective, the difficulties do not solely rest on the coaching staff. Injuries to key figures like Juan Soto, Francisco Lindor, and Jorge Polanco have notably affected offensive performance, placing the Mets in the bottom positions of several categories, including runs scored. Despite the adverse outlook, the management believes there is still room for recovery, with 131 games remaining in the Major League Baseball season. They are confident that the team can stage a comeback similar to the one achieved in 2024, when under Mendoza’s leadership they improved after an irregular start. The 46-year-old Venezuelan manager is in the final guaranteed year of his contract, with a club option for 2027, and has a record of 182-173 at the helm of the team.
