FORT MYERS, Florida.— If anyone has the authority to evaluate the pitching of the Boston Red Sox, it’s Pedro Martínez. The Hall of Famer, considered by many as the most dominant pitcher in the history of the franchise, analyzed the club’s current rotation and highlighted the presence of “a true ace” at the top.

That recognition was for the left-hander
Garrett Crochet, who will be the Opening Day starter on March 26 in Cincinnati. Martínez assured that Crochet’s performance in Game 1 of the American League Wild Card Series last season —when he worked 7.2 innings of one run and 11 strikeouts at Yankee Stadium— reminded him of his best times with Boston.
“He’s a pitcher you can build a team around,” Martinez said during his annual stint as a special instructor at the club’s camp. “He has the talent, the mindset, and the commitment to lead a rotation.”
The Dominican even considered that Crochet possesses superior physical tools to those he himself had in terms of sustained speed and endurance, highlighting his consistency above 97-98 miles per hour and his strength in each outing.
Experience and balance
Martínez also valued the arrival of veteran
Sonny Gray, whom he defined as the perfect complement to the young ace.
“Sonny’s wisdom is invaluable. He’s a pitcher who knows how to compete, how to adjust, and how to guide the younger ones. Even Crochet can learn from him,” he affirmed.
Regarding the Venezuelan left-hander
Ranger Suárez, who signed a five-year contract with the organization, Pedro was clear: if he manages to stay healthy, he could form one of the most dominant duos in the American League alongside Crochet. “He’s a true pitcher. He just needs to be healthy,” he noted.
Brayan Bello’s Turn
One of the names that generates the most excitement is that of the also Dominican
Brayan Bello, who has worked on several occasions at Martínez’s residence in the Dominican Republic during the winters.
For Pedro, this must be Bello’s year of consolidation.
“He’s in excellent physical shape. Stronger, more committed. I think we’ll see more speed and greater consistency. This could be his breakout year,” he assured.

Although part of the fans expected the incorporation of a power bat, Martinez defended the strategy of reinforcing the pitching.
“I like the combination we have. If we combine this rotation with good defense, the team can compete seriously. We won’t lack offense; there is talent to get on base and produce. The key will be health and defense,” he concluded.
