The incident was revealed by the Red Sox radio announcer, Will Flemming, during an interview on the program WEEI Afternoons, where he recounted how Clark volunteered to work with Devers, who never showed up for training. The information was later confirmed by Clark himself in an interview with No Filter Network.Clark suggested that the Dominican avoided the sessions due to media pressure following his controversial departure from Boston and the controversial request from executive Craig Breslow that he take over first base, a position he has never played in his nine years in the Major Leagues.“On Friday, Saturday, and Sunday he didn’t go out early at all. He didn’t even bat in the field,” Clark stated. “Everyone apologized to me, but I understood. I didn’t take it personally.”
Devers, who was initially reluctant to change positions, stated after arriving in San Francisco that he was willing to play wherever necessary. Although he has already done some practice at first base, he has not yet officially debuted in that position during a game with the Giants. Despite the impasse, Clark made it clear that he intends to work with Devers and trusts in his potential:“I didn’t want to be standing on first base with the Boston press watching every move. I understand perfectly,” Clark pointed out.
The Dominican designated hitter seems to have left the bad moment behind with a solid start to July: he’s batting .320/.419/.440, with three doubles and four RBIs in seven games, carrying a seven-game hitting streak.“Next time you’re in San Francisco, you’ll be on first base, just so you know. Even if I have to drag you,” he joked.
Meanwhile, his former team, the Boston Red Sox, is going through a good moment and will seek its fifth consecutive victory this Tuesday against the Colorado Rockies.
