MIAMI. The Uruguay national team had to work hard to avoid a defeat in their 2026 FIFA World Cup debut, drawing 1-1 against Saudi Arabia thanks to a saving goal by Maximiliano Araújo in the final minutes of the match held at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.

The team led by Marcelo Bielsa encountered numerous difficulties in overcoming the defensive order of the Saudis and ended up rescuing a valuable point after being behind on the scoreboard for a large part of the match.
Saudi Arabia surprised the South Americans by taking the lead in the 41st minute of the first half. Defender Ali Al Amri took advantage of a rebound conceded by goalkeeper Fernando Muslera following a set-piece play and sent the ball into the back of the net to make it 1-0.

For much of the first half, both teams showed caution, prioritizing defensive organization and avoiding taking risks. However, the Saudi goal forced Uruguay to rethink its strategy for the second half.
Aware of the need for greater offensive depth, Bielsa made changes from the start of the second half, bringing on Agustín Canobbio and Juan Manuel Sanabria in search of speed and a greater presence in attack.
La Celeste dominated possession and created several clear goal-scoring opportunities, including a powerful strike by Manuel Ugarte that hit the post 60 minutes into the game.
The Uruguayan insistence finally paid off in the 80th minute. Maximiliano Araújo appeared to connect with a left-footed cross-shot that beat goalkeeper Mohammed Al Owais and sealed the final draw.
After the equalizer, Uruguay searched intensely for the winning goal, but lacked precision in the final meters and had to settle for sharing points in their World Cup debut.
The draw leaves the Group H landscape wide open heading into the second matchday. Uruguay will face Cape Verde on June 21st, while Saudi Arabia will have a demanding match against Spain.
Although the result was not what the Charrúas expected, the reaction in the final minutes allowed them to avoid a defeat that would have complicated their aspirations from the start of the tournament.
