Leandro Paredes involved in post-match altercation after World Cup final

Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes was involved in a heated confrontation with Spain players Eric García and Gavi following Argentina’s 1-0 defeat in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final on Sunday.

The incident occurred moments after the final whistle at MetLife Stadium in New York/New Jersey, as tensions flared on the pitch during Spain’s title celebrations.

Television footage showed Eric García confronting an Argentina player before Paredes stepped in and appeared to grab the Spanish defender by the neck. Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni immediately intervened to separate the players and calm the situation.

The confrontation escalated when Spain midfielder Gavi approached to defend his teammate and challenge Paredes over the incident. Paredes then appeared to push Gavi to the ground, placing a hand on his face during the exchange.

The altercation quickly drew players and staff members from both teams, although the situation was brought under control before it developed into a larger brawl.

Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 to win the 2026 FIFA World Cup, securing the nation’s second world title.
