New York Mets first baseman Jared Young was carted off the field Thursday night after being knocked unconscious when he was struck in the head by the knee of pitcher Nolan McLean during a collision at first base. The incident occurred in the sixth inning of the Mets’ 3-0 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies.
Mets manager Andy Green said Young underwent a CT scan at a hospital that came back negative. The 31-year-old was experiencing concussion symptoms but had full use of his extremities. Green described the collision as “a terrifying moment on a baseball field” and said it took Young some time to regain consciousness.
Young was immobilized on the cart and gave a thumbs-up as he was taken from the field. McLean, who was shaken by the collision, remained in the game to finish the inning before being replaced at the start of the seventh. Young is in his first full major league season and is batting .266 with nine home runs and 39 RBIs in 103 games.
