1844: Tomás Bobadilla and Archbishop Tomás de Porte, support France’s protection of the nascent Dominican Republic, in exchange for the bay and peninsula of Samaná.
– Juan Pablo Duarte stages a coup against the pro-French and expels them from the Central Governing Junta, placing Francisco del Rosario Sánchez as president.
1852: President Buenaventura Báez decrees that during Sundays and holidays, work, transportation of goods, and commercial establishments are prohibited from opening their doors.
1856: Due to strong opposition, President Pedro Santana is forced to resign, with Vice President Manuel de Regla Mota taking over the presidency.
