New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani visited a Colombian bakery in Jackson Heights, Queens, where he sampled pandebono and agua de panela alongside the owners of the business.
The visit was documented by content creator Chinita Paisa, who shared a video of the encounter on Instagram. In the footage, Mamdani can be seen trying the Colombian specialties and joking about how much he might eat during the visit.
“I’m going to gain so much weight here. I’m very excited,” Mamdani said while laughing. When someone accompanying him asked whether that was dangerous, he replied, “Dangerous. But very good.”
The bakery, Seba Seba, was founded by brothers Luis and Rubén Velázquez in Jackson Heights. According to the story shared with the video, Luis arrived in New York at age 16 without speaking English and eventually built the business with his brother.
During the visit, Mamdani spoke with the owners about the bakery’s history and its nearly four decades in the community. The business has become known for its Colombian products and its connection to immigrants in New York.
