Baking soda may help reduce underarm odor, but hygiene remains key

Underarm odor is caused by a combination of sweat and bacteria on the skin. Natural body odor can vary from person to person and may be influenced by factors such as hormones, diet and medications.

Experts at Cleveland Clinic include baking soda among natural options that may help reduce unpleasant underarm odor. The ingredient can help balance the skin’s acidity and decrease odor.

To use it, mix a moderate amount of baking soda with a small amount of water until it forms a paste. Apply a thin layer to clean, completely dry underarms. There is no need to rub the skin vigorously or use large amounts, as the area can be sensitive.

If burning, itching, redness or peeling develops, the baking soda should be removed and its use discontinued. If irritation continues after stopping, a dermatologist should be consulted.

Good hygiene remains essential. The UK National Health Service recommends washing the armpits, feet and groin at least twice a day, drying the skin thoroughly and changing clothes regularly. Antiperspirants and deodorants can also be used when needed.

A sudden change in body odor, a much stronger smell or odor that persists despite improved hygiene may warrant consultation with a healthcare professional.
