Black coffee itself contains very few calories and does not directly cause weight gain. What can significantly change its nutritional profile is what is added to the drink, such as sugar, cream, syrups, chocolate or whipped cream.

Registered dietitian Megan Rasmussen explains that “what matters is what you add to your coffee.” Added creams, syrups and sweeteners can increase calorie intake and, when consumed frequently, contribute to weight gain.

A plain cup of black coffee contains almost no calories or fat and also provides caffeine and plant compounds such as polyphenols, including chlorogenic acid.

Some specialists also note that caffeine can increase feelings of energy and has been associated with physical activity and exercise performance. However, the article advises being mindful of additional calories and not exceeding four to five cups of coffee per day.

When can coffee contribute to weight gain?

The biggest difference comes from the ingredients added to the drink. Sugar, cream, whole milk, syrups, chocolate, caramel and whipped cream can turn a low-calorie coffee into a much more calorie-dense beverage.

Some large commercial coffee drinks can contain hundreds of calories and substantial amounts of added sugar. If consumed frequently and in quantities that push daily calorie intake above energy needs, they can contribute to weight gain.

Adding just a small amount of sugar every day can also add up over time. Alternatives such as plant-based milk may reduce calories, although some varieties contain added sugars, so nutrition labels should be checked.
