The launch of Kimi K3, a new artificial intelligence model developed by Chinese AI company Moonshot AI, has reignited the debate over whether China can match or even surpass leading U.S. AI systems such as ChatGPT and Claude despite restrictions on access to advanced semiconductors.
With 2.8 trillion parameters, Moonshot says Kimi K3 is the world’s largest open-weight AI model. According to reports, its performance is approaching that of the latest systems developed by OpenAI and Anthropic, raising concerns in Silicon Valley that China may have significantly narrowed the technological gap with the United States.
