Drivers across Norfolk, Virginia, encountered flooded streets and major travel disruptions Tuesday evening after torrential rain triggered what officials described as a once-in-60-year flash flood event.
Several inches of rain fell across the city in a short period, flooding roads and underpasses and turning routine commutes into lengthy delays.
Residents described the storm as one of the worst they had experienced. “I’ve always heard about how bad it can get. I’ve never actually experienced it, especially not to this extent,” one Norfolk resident said.
Authorities reminded motorists to avoid driving through flooded roads, as water levels can rise rapidly during flash floods. Many residents emphasized the importance of patience and caution while traveling as crews worked to clear storm drains and affected roadways.
