Around 14,000 people died in Germany this summer in connection with heat waves, surpassing the previous record of about 8,900 heat-related deaths recorded in 2018, according to estimates from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI).
An estimated 9,600 deaths occurred between June 22 and 28, a particularly hot week when temperatures exceeded 41°C (105.8°F) in some parts of the country.
People aged 75 and older were the most affected, according to the RKI. The figures are estimates because heat is generally not listed as the direct cause of death on death certificates.
