Hurricane Karina strengthened to Category 4 on Monday as it moved westward across the Pacific Ocean, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center.
Karina had maximum sustained winds of 233 km/h and was located about 1,640 kilometers west-southwest of the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula. No coastal watches or warnings have been issued, although dangerous surf is expected to affect parts of Mexico and potentially Southern California.
Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Lowell was located about 1,380 kilometers east-southeast of Hawaii, with maximum sustained winds of 97 km/h. Forecasters said Lowell could become a hurricane Monday night or Tuesday.
