Hurricane Simon, a Category 4 storm, is impacting Mexico’s western coast, prompting President Claudia Sheinbaum to urge residents in coastal municipalities of Jalisco, Colima, Nayarit and Michoacán to remain sheltered.

The storm’s center is located about 40 kilometers from Playa Pérula in Jalisco, with sustained winds of 220 km/h and gusts reaching 270 km/h.

Authorities forecast extraordinary rainfall in Jalisco, where waves could reach 8 to 10 meters along the coast. Torrential rainfall is expected in Colima, with waves between 6 and 8 meters.

Mexico’s National Civil Protection Coordination warned that the danger remains even if winds or rainfall weaken. Residents are advised to stay indoors, keep away from windows and avoid traveling on streets or near rivers until authorities issue an official notice.
