Microburst unleashes torrential rain over Tokyo

A powerful microburst struck Tokyo’s Minato district, unleashing intense rainfall and strong downdrafts that rapidly drenched the area.

The phenomenon, commonly referred to in Japan as a “guerrilla downpour,” occurs when a column of cold, dense air descends rapidly from a cumulonimbus cloud, producing sudden, localized bursts of heavy rain and strong winds.

Videos shared on social media captured sheets of rain sweeping across the district as visibility dropped dramatically within seconds.

Microbursts are capable of producing hazardous conditions, including flash flooding, dangerous wind gusts and reduced visibility, even though they typically affect relatively small areas and last only a short time.
