A trailer carrying 39 migrants on Thursday, June 4, evaded a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) checkpoint in Falfurrias, Texas, and ended up on fire after a pursuit, according to an official report. Authorities rescued all the people who were inside the trailer and brought them to safety.
The incident occurred at 8:36 PM, central time, when the semi-truck approached the checkpoint located in Encino. During the inspection, a Border Patrol K9 unit alerted to the trailer, according to the bulletin.
The agents ordered the driver to proceed to the secondary inspection area, but the man ignored the instruction and fled the scene.
Following the rescue, the migrants underwent a medical evaluation to detect any potential injuries before being taken into custody, according to official information.

The episode once again exposed the risks of clandestine transfers at the southern border of the United States, where smuggling networks move people in conditions of confinement and overcrowding.
The escape along Highway 281 and the deployment of tire spikes

After the escape, agents from the Texas Department of Public Safety and Falfurrias personnel initiated a tactical pursuit of the vehicle, according to the report. Authorities activated lights and sirens to stop the truck, but the driver continued north on Highway 281.

The official report indicated that, even with the tires deflated by the immobilization system, the suspect continued driving until the truck’s cab caught fire.
Shortly after the stop, the trailer also began to burn for reasons that remain under investigation, according to the same text. The report did not specify whether the fire originated from a mechanical failure, friction linked to the immobilization device, or another reason.
At the scene, agents and state police removed two occupants from the cab and detained them, according to the report. It was during that intervention that they detected there were people inside the trailer.
The officers opened the compartment, which was locked, and rescued the 39 occupants before the fire consumed the structure, according to authorities. According to the report, the undocumented migrants got out on their own before the flames completely engulfed the trailer.
The operation included the immediate evacuation of the risk area to prevent smoke from affecting the rescued people and the agents themselves.
Afterwards, the authorities performed a routine medical evaluation to rule out injuries associated with confinement, the pursuit, or exposure to the fire. The bulletin indicated that, following that check, the migrants remained in custody.

The investigation of the case was placed under the charge of HSI and CBP to determine the origin of the fire and the organization of the clandestine transport.
The case remained under joint investigation by the Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) division and CBP, according to the official statement. In parallel, the agency’s Office of Professional Responsibility is reviewing the incident, the text added.
So far, the report has not released the identities of those detained, nor did it detail what charges they will face. It also did not state the nationality of the 39 people rescued or the planned route of the transfer.
The episode also became known for the coverage by Univision, which cited the same official bulletin to reconstruct the sequence of the stop, the pursuit, and the rescue.
In that publication, it was reported that the truck caught fire during the escape and that the trailer began to burn shortly after, while investigations remained open to establish the origin of the fire.
