Benjamin Netanyahu asks the President of Israel to pardon him
In response, the president’s office communicated that Herzog will wait to receive the opinions of judicial officials before considering the “extraordinary request that carries significant implications”.
Over the past five years, Netanyahu has been on trial accused of bribery, fraud, and breach of trust in connection with three separate cases. The leader defends his innocence.
In a video message, Netanyahu expressed that he would have preferred to see the process run its course to the end, but national interests “demanded otherwise”.
The opposition in Israel claims that it should acknowledge its guilt before seeking a pardon.
At the beginning of this month, U.S. President Donald Trump urged Herzog to “fully pardon” the Prime Minister.
At that moment, Herzog made it clear that anyone seeking a pardon would have to submit a formal request.
On Sunday, the president’s office published the request and a letter written by the prime minister himself, in view of “the importance of this extraordinary request and its implications”.
