Citizens of España Avenue react to the rape case of a Haitian woman

Santo Domingo.- People who transit, exercise, and go to España Avenue for recreation expressed their concern after learning about the case of a Haitian woman who was sexually assaulted and robbed of her belongings by members of the National Police and the Dominican Republic Navy.

Citizens agreed that events like this add to a worrying increase in similar rape cases that have been widely reported in recent days.

“There are many cases that are happening right now; this has to do with the twisted minds of certain people,” stated one of those consulted, while another pointed out: “Members of the police are supposed to take care of us and protect us, but they are the ones who commit these horrible acts.”

Several citizens expressed feeling vulnerable and requested greater security in the area.

“We need action to be taken so that people can walk peacefully and without fear,” agreed some of those interviewed.

The spokesperson for the National Police, Diego Pesqueira, informed that the accused are in custody and that a coercive measure will be known to them tomorrow. The authorities assured that the case will be followed up and that transparency in the judicial process will be guaranteed.
