“The poor are those who will struggle”: citizens react with concern to the economic outlook

SANTO DOMINGO.– Amid an international context marked by the conflict in Iran and the sustained rise in oil prices, citizens consulted expressed concern about the possible impact on the cost of living and the economic measures that could be adopted in the country to address the situation. The main fear of users revolves around a possible widespread price increase. Daniel, one of those consulted, considered that any economic adjustment could affect the most vulnerable sectors more strongly.

“When we talk about war, everything goes up. The poor are the ones who are going to struggle, that’s why it’s important that measures are taken to help people,” he expressed.

Other citizens, like Mathias, understand that the situation is due to international factors, although they recognize that the local impact is inevitable. “It’s a situation that will affect us. There is more fear about what may happen, but hopefully the oil market will stabilize”, he/she pointed out, referring to the uncertainty generated by the global scenario.

Beyond the concern, some citizens propose measures focused on reducing public spending. Among them, limiting benefits to public officials while the economic situation lasts. “If sacrifices must be made, they should be balanced”, commented a citizen, suggesting that the measures include all sectors. Adding to this context is the concern about the cost of basic services, especially electricity. Families consulted indicated that the electricity bill already represents a significant burden on their budgets, so they fear that future adjustments will further increase monthly spending. With an uncertain international scenario and rising oil prices, citizens agree on the need for measures to mitigate the economic impact, while remaining expectant of how the situation will evolve in the coming weeks.
