Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Medical Association (CMD) ratified this Monday the 24-hour national strike called for this Tuesday, from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, in rejection of what it described as an abuse committed by the La Vega Prosecutor’s Office against Dr. William Almánzar and his assistant.
During a press conference, the guild stated that the day of protest remains “firm and unalterable” in response to judicial actions that, in their view, violate the practice of medicine and due process.
The CMD reported that Dr. William Almánzar remains deprived of his liberty for a period that, it maintained, exceeds 48 hours, a situation it considers a violation of the constitutional guarantees established in the Constitution of the Republic.
Likewise, he defended the role of medical assistants, noting that they are a legitimate part of the care process and should not be criminalized.

“The doctor is a professional trained to preserve life; their nature is never to do harm,” stated the guild’s board, while criticizing what it considers an abuse of power by the Public Prosecutor’s Office of La Vega.
The CMD warned that the actions of the authorities create a climate of legal insecurity for health professionals and expressed concern about the implications that the application of the new Penal Code could have on medical practice.
Despite the strike, the Medical Association guaranteed that critical hospital areas will continue to operate, including emergency rooms, intensive care units, and the care of hospitalized patients, with the purpose of not putting the population’s lives at risk.

The guild reiterated its demand for the immediate release of Dr. William Almánzar and his assistant, as well as the cessation of what it described as an abuse of power by the La Vega Prosecutor’s Office. Furthermore, it stated that it will remain in permanent session and does not rule out further actions if its demands are not met.
