Doctors announce 24-hour strike in municipal hospitals of the province

San Francisco de Macorís. – The Dominican Medical Association, Duarte branch, announced a 24-hour work stoppage in the province’s municipal hospitals for this Thursday, August 13, due to the shortage of doctors and specialists affecting the health system.

Roberto Aquino, president of the branch, stated that in centers such as the Villa Riva and Arenoso hospitals, a single doctor has had to cover 24-hour shifts, attending to emergencies, admitted patients, births, and other procedures.

He also denounced a lack of pediatricians in Las Guáranas, in addition to security problems and a deficit of specialists in other hospitals in the province.

Aquino explained that the authorities were informed of the situation since May and that, despite commitments made by the regional health director, they have still not received concrete responses.

The strike will begin at 8:00 a.m. on Thursday and will conclude at 8:00 a.m. on Friday. During the day, only emergencies and admitted patients will be attended to.
