Santo Domingo.- The Chamber of Deputies approved this Tuesday, in two consecutive discussions and after declaring it a matter of urgency, the bill that declares the province of Azua as the tomato capital of the Dominican Republic, in recognition of its leadership in the national production of this crop.
The initiative, presented by congresswoman Ángela Maruja Pérez and supported by the province’s legislators, highlights that Azua produces around four million quintals of tomatoes per year, equivalent to more than 80% of the national production, consolidating itself as the country’s main agricultural hub for this crop.
The project also highlights the economic impact of tomato activity in the province, by generating thousands of direct and indirect jobs for producers, day laborers, and merchants, in addition to contributing nearly 900 million pesos annually to the local and national economy.

During the same session, the deputies approved a resolution recognizing pianist, composer, arranger, and music producer Janina Rosado Peralta for her more than four decades of artistic career and her contributions to the development of Dominican music.
Rosado, a native of Santiago Rodríguez and musical director of Juan Luis Guerra and 440 since 1994, has been awarded 12 Latin Grammy Awards, in addition to receiving various national and international recognitions for her contribution to the art and music industry.
